Job Description - Print Page

Demolition operatives demolish or dismantle buildings and structures. The work also involves site preparation, stripping out fittings and removing reusable materials. The work they do depends on their level of experience.

Operatives erect and dismantle screens, dustsheets and fences around sites. They help to erect safety rails on roofs and seal off drains. They also clean, grade and sort materials for re-use.

More experienced workers have additional responsibilities such as cutting steel with oxy-fuel cutting equipment, working at heights, stripping fragile roof coverings and instructing others in safe demolition practises.

Demolition operatives work a basic 39-hour week. Weekend work and overtime are often required. The work is mainly outdoors in dirty, dusty, noisy conditions and in all weathers. It involves climbing, working at heights, lifting and bending.

Salaries range from about £12,000 to £20,000.

Demolition operatives should:

  • be physically fit
  • have a head for heights
  • have manual skills for operating tools and equipment.

Extensive building and development programmes ensure that there will always be a demand for demolition and land clearance throughout the country. Specialist companies are employed for this work.

Formal qualifications are not essential for this work, but some GCSEs/S grades (A-D/1-4) can be useful, including maths, English, science subjects and CDT. Entrants need to be at least 18. Adult entry is usual, but all applicants must be fit and physically strong.

All operatives in the demolition industry must do safety training, and there are a number of assessments they can take to improve their skills and progress. There are NVQs at Levels 2 and 3 in Demolition.

Within the larger contracting companies there are opportunities for experienced operatives to progress to supervisory and management levels.
