Job Description - Print Page

DTP (desk top publishing) operators work alongside graphic designers and typographers to produce high quality business literature for a wide range of customers. The literature can be extremely varied and have many different uses such as marketing, advertising and internal communications.

DTP operators use computers to:

  •  scan photographs and other images
  •  produce diagrams, charts and tables
  •  insert text and illustrations into documents.

DTP operators typically work around 39 hours a week, Monday to Friday. However, sometimes an operator may be expected to work late to meet a deadline. If working for weekly or daily publications, operators may work in shifts. Most DTP operators work from a clean and well-lit office or studio. There are also some opportunities to work from home on a freelance basis.

Salaries range from approximately £13,000 for a first position to more than £30,000 for experienced operators. If freelance, DTP operators will charge an hourly rate.

DTP operators should be:

  • highly computer literate
  • imaginative and artistic
  • patient and methodical
  • able to plan and prioritise work projects.

Employed by publishing, graphic design or advertising companies, with positions also available in printing and reprographics institutions, there are opportunities for DTP operators throughout the UK, with a concentration of positions in London and other major cities.

DTP operators can enter this profession directly from school or college. To become a DTP operator the entry requirements are generally GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) in maths, IT and English. Although a degree is not always required, many people entering as a DTP operator have a degree in graphic design or computing. Entry requirements for a degree course, are usually five GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) including English and maths, and at least two A levels/H grades, or equivalent. Apprenticeships may be available.

Employers usually provide training. This may be supported by part-time courses at local colleges or through in-house training programmes. DTP operators are expected to keep up to date with new publishing packages.

Promotion to a more senior position within a team, or to a shift leader or supervisor may be possible. It is sometimes possible for DTP operators to train and progress as graphic designers. A portfolio is usually essential for advancement.
