Job Description - Print Page

The role of a cleaner is to remove the everyday dirt and grime from a building, making it safe, healthy and pleasant to work or live in.

Cleaners work in many different types of buildings and may specialise in certain types of cleaning - general cleaning in places such as offices, hotels, schools, factories and shops, or specialist cleaning such as hospital cleaners, cleaning food premises or vehicles.

Cleaners often work irregular hours in shifts, often in the evening or early morning - on average 38 hours a week. They may be full time, part time or casual staff. They mostly work indoors but cleaning can involve working outside.

The average starting salary is from £7,000. Some specialist cleaners may earn £15,000 or more.

Cleaners need to be:

  • methodical
  • responsible and hardworking
  • able to work unsupervised
  • able to follow instructions
  • able to measure out cleaning materials accurately
  • reasonably fit.

There are as many as one million professional cleaners employed in the UK, and about three quarters are part time. There is a constant demand for cleaners.

Cleaners do not need formal qualifications, although some numerical skills are needed for measuring out cleaning fluids.

There are several NVQs/SVQs at Levels 1 and 2, or City & Guilds and British Institute of Cleaning Sciences (BICSc) certificates which cleaners can study for.

Cleaners with larger employers can become supervisors, and some set up their own cleaning businesses.
