Junior managers are the first line of management in the Civil Service.
Some junior managers are in charge of a team of administrative officers, directing their work and dealing with any unusual problems. Others train in a specific area of work such as fraud investigation or immigration control.
Civil Service junior managers are employed in around 100 departments, agencies and devolved administrations, dealing with a huge range of issues that affect everyone in the country.
Most staff work 36-37 hours a week. Flexitime, part-time and job-sharing are often available. Posts are normally office-based, although some travel may be required.
Salaries range from £15,000 up to £25,000.
Junior managers in the Civil Service need:
Young people can start in this work straight from school or after university - with a degree they can apply for the Fast Stream training programme. The qualifications depend on individual departments and agencies, but they may ask for two A levels/H grades equivalent.
It is also quite common to start as an adult, and there is no upper age limit for vacancies in the Civil Service.
All jobs are open to British nationals and around 75% are also open to Commonwealth citizens or European Union nationals.
The Civil Service is one of the country's largest employers, with around half a million staff based all over the country. There are structured promotion paths linked to an appraisal system.
