Job Description - Print Page

Civil engineers are involved in the planning, design and construction of buildings and structures which affect our daily lives.

Civil engineers work on a wide range of projects, including our homes, where we work, transport systems like roads, railways, airports, docks, bridges and tunnels, as well as structures such as power stations, dams, water supply and sewerage systems.

Once the plans have been approved and construction starts, civil engineers are in charge until the project is completed. They might be involved at any point from conception, design, construction and maintenance to demolition.

Civil engineers work both in offices and on site. Site work may be in areas that are sometimes inhospitable or remote.

New graduate engineers earn about £19,000 to £22,000 a year, and senior chartered civil engineers can earn more than £45,000.

A civil engineer should:

  • be able to think creatively
  • have a practical outlook
  • be good at maths and physics.

The usual requirement to train as a civil engineer is to study full time for a degree. There is no maximum age, and most universities and colleges welcome applications from adults.

There are about 100,000 professional civil and structural engineers in Britain. Because of the broad experience their degrees provide, civil engineering graduates are sought after by many different types of organisation.

There are many opportunities to work abroad. Civil engineers tend to move jobs regularly to gain experience and responsibility. Promotion will depend on proven ability and experience.
