Job Description - Print Page

Choreographers are designers of dance and movement. They create and arrange the dancing and movement in musical productions. Their work can be seen in many different forms, from the dance routines performed by boy bands and their backing groups to the graceful movements of the principal dancer in a classical ballet.

Choreographers usually specialise in a form of dance or movement, such as:

  • classical ballet
  • contemporary dance
  • musical theatre productions
  • ice dance shows
  • co-ordinating the movements of models in fashion shows.

The role of a choreographer is to plan and rehearse the way dancers will perform. They may invent new routines which could include choosing music, or interpret existing works. As well as dancers, they work with producers, directors, musicians, and designers. They may record movements using symbols called dance notation.

Like most jobs in theatre, film and television, the hours of work can vary enormously. Choreographers work daytime hours practising and rehearsing their dancers, and often attend shows in the evening. They can find work in a variety of different venues - theatres, film and TV studios, nightclubs, hotels, halls, cruise liners and holiday resorts. They often have to travel widely, including abroad.

Trainees start on around £12,000, and experienced choreographers can earn over £40,000.

They must have a genuine interest in music and movement and be dedicated to a career in the performing arts. Choreographers also need a lot of creativity, determination and good communication skills.

Many people move into choreography after a career as a dancer. Most dance courses include an element of choreography and an increasing number of courses offer students the opportunity to study the subject at degree or postgraduate level.

The number of jobs in choreography is very limited, so only the most talented and dedicated are likely to succeed.
