Chiropractors treat patients who have mechanical problems with their joints, muscles and ligaments. They do this by using their hands to adjust the joints of the spine and limbs. They aim to relieve pain and improve mobility.
Chiropractors work flexible hours. They usually work indoors in a consulting room.
Most chiropractors are self-employed and charge between £20 and £60 an hour. Newly-qualified chiropractors might earn around £18,000 a year; with experience they can earn up to £70,000 a year.

The number of chiropractors has grown quickly and there are now 2,130 registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). There is a need for more chiropractors throughout the UK.
To become a chiropractor it is necessary to complete a degree course accredited by the GCC, then register with the GCC. Entry to courses usually requires three A levels/four H grades plus GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3). Equivalent qualifications are accepted.
At present only two places offer accredited chiropractic degree courses - the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (Bournemouth) and The University of Glamorgan. Courses last four years full time.
