Job Description - Print Page

Chimney sweeps, also referred to as chimney engineers, are responsible for:

  • cleaning, servicing and maintaining the flues and chimneys of open fires, as well as heating and cooking appliances
  • providing a brief report for their customers - advising of any problems and suggesting a date for further inspections and cleaning.

They usually work from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday work. During busy periods, such as autumn and spring, they may have to work longer hours.

Although the majority of work is residential, chimney sweeps can work anywhere with heating systems, including industrial and commercial premises.

Salaries range from around £15,000 to £25,000 a year.

Chimney sweeps should:

  • be physically fit and energetic, with plenty of stamina
  • be personable, trustworthy and considerate
  • be good with their hands and able to use a range of tools
  • be capable of using their own initiative
  • have administration and business skills
  • be aware of health and safety regulations
  • enjoy practical work.

Most chimney sweeps are self-employed. They have to purchase equipment and public liability insurance cover, in addition to covering costs associated with promoting the business. There may also be opportunities to work for larger chimney sweeping companies.

There are no formal entry qualifications, however employers prefer basic competence in English and maths, and a full driving licence. Adult entry is possible.

Entrants may train on the job, learning from experienced chimney sweeps. It is also possible to work towards a Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)/City & Guilds NVQ/SVQ in Chimney Engineering at Level 2. In addition, training is available through approved training providers such as The National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS).

Chimney sweeps often supplement their income through general building work or chimney and roof repairs. Some act as ‘lucky sweeps' at weddings.
