Cellar technicians install and maintain drinks-dispensing systems in licensed premises, and in other places where soft drinks are served.
They discuss with the venue management where the taps, piping and barrels or tanks of the drinks can be placed. Then they install equipment using hand tools, cutting and altering furnishings to fit the equipment. They also connect the system with mains water, electricity supply and drainage, and test it.
Technicians teach the bar manager and staff how to operate the equipment correctly, and diagnose and repair faults quickly.
Technicians must work within health and safety laws, and complete paperwork to record the work done and to show that all the checks have been carried out.
Cellar technicians work a basic 40-hour week, and may have to be available for emergency call-out at short notice.
Salaries range from around £9,000, to £20,000 a year.

Employers throughout the UK include: breweries, soft-drinks manufacturers, drinks-dispense equipment manufacturers and specialist firms who provide services to breweries.
There are no particular academic requirements to enter training. However, GCSEs/S grades in English, maths, and possibly also science and technology, might be needed. There are no age limits for work as a cellar technician.
Promotion is to supervisory or management positions. Some technicians move into sales roles.
