Suspended ceilings are often used in offices, shops, factories and other commercial buildings. They hide wiring, pipes and air conditioning equipment, and are sometimes used for design reasons. Ceiling fixers install these ceilings in all sorts of buildings. They have to:
Ceiling fixers work a 39-hour week. They may work overtime, including weekends. They spend most of their time indoors, usually at ceiling height. The work involves lifting, carrying, bending and climbing ladders.
Salaries range from around £15,600 to over £30,000.

There are opportunities for ceiling fixers to work for companies which specialise in fitting suspended ceilings in commercial premises. An increasing number of ceiling fixers work for themselves, and some set up their own companies.
School leavers can apply for Modern Apprenticeships in Interior Systems, specialising in ceiling fixing. It is also possible to apply to CITB-ConstructionSkills for a place on a Construction Craft Apprenticeship. There is no maximum age limit, although some employers are unwilling to train older applicants.
Apprenticeships involve learning practical skills with an employer, while spending time at college or a training centre to gain qualifications.
With experience, ceiling fixers can progress to supervisory or managerial roles.
