Car valets clean and finish car exteriors and interiors, using specialist equipment and cleaning products. A full car valet would include:
Working hours for car valets vary. Weekend and seasonal work are common. Some valets work in garages with access to specialist cleaning equipment. Others travel to customers and work from a mobile unit. Car valets come into contact with oil and grease, and work with potentially hazardous cleaning agents. This may not suit people with allergies or skin conditions.
Salaries range from £9,500 to £15,000 with overtime and shift payments.

Valets work for specialist mobile valeting firms, or in car dealerships or garages.
No formal academic qualifications are required, but qualifications in practical or technical subjects may be useful.
New car valets train on the job, and may go on short courses run by the manufacturers of cleaning chemicals. The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICs) offers a car valeting certificate and City & Guilds offer an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Cleaning Passenger Transport.
Promotion may be possible to supervisor, or to area manager in larger firms.
