Job Description - Print Page

Butlers work in private households or within the hospitality industry. They provide a personalised service to their employer. They may work for a celebrity, royalty or a wealthy family. They are responsible for their clients' residences, in addition to tasks such as:

  • greeting visitors and welcoming guests
  • overseeing security and travel arrangements
  • organising house moves
  • party planning and cooking to fine dining standards
  • managing household and garden staff
  • creating a welcoming environment for their employer.

In the hotel and catering industry, butlers deal with different guests but still provide a high standard of service. They ensure that guest's individual needs are met in the most effcient manner.

A butler's working environment may be luxurious, ranging from country estates and overseas villas to five-star hotels. In return, they are expected to be thoroughly loyal, dedicated and work very long and irregular hours. They must be prepared to travel widely with their employer, or travel ahead to open up a house in advance of their employer's arrival. They may spend time in the kitchen, preparing meals for their employer or co-ordinating large dinner parties.

Salaries range from around £16,000 to £50,000 a year, or more.

A butler must have a range of social and household management skills, including:

  • loyalty and discretion
  • good manners and appearance
  • dignity and courtesy
  • cooking skills
  • an understanding of the rules of etiquette
  • an appreciation of fine dining and fine wines
  • an interest in the care and well-being of people.

Opportunities in this field are increasing. Employers are usually wealthy people who are often in the public eye.

Young people may apply for under-butler positions and work their way up. They may work towards qualifications such as NVQs/SVQs in Guest Service or Food and Drink Service. Academic qualifications are not required, although many butlers offer experience gained in other environments, such as the Armed Forces or the catering and hospitality industry. Some butlers attend privately-run butler training schools.

Most butlers stay within the profession, although they may seek more prestigious postings either in this country or abroad. Hotel-employed butlers may move into areas of hotel management or training.
