• A manager of a building society branch is responsible for setting and achieving targets, and motivating and leading staff.
• Marketing and selling products and services such as mortgages, loans, savings schemes and income bonds, is a major part of the job.
• They spend a lot of time interviewing customers, discussing mortgage and loan applications and offering financial planning and investment advice.

Normal building society hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and usually Saturday mornings. Managers sometimes attend meetings outside these hours. They usually work in modern, open plan offices with interview rooms for meeting customers. They are likely to travel to meetings outside the office.

Salaries start between £17,000 and £26,000 and can rise to £51,000, or more.

A building society manager should be:

• a good communicator
• able to build strong working relationships
• able to negotiate, solve problems and make effective decisions.

There are approximately 65 building societies in the UK, with around 2,100 branches. Most branches have a manager. One manager usually looks after several smaller branches.

Management jobs are also available in regional and head offices, call centres and online account management. Buildings societies also recruit direct onto management training schemes.

Building societies recruit direct onto management training schemes. Usually two A levels/H grades, equivalent qualifications, or a degree, are required. There are no upper age limits for management training schemes in building societies.

People can work their way up through jobs such as building society assistant, specialist customer service adviser, to trainee manager and manager.
