Builders' merchants usually open Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 5pm, and also Saturday morning. Large DIY outlets open seven days a week. Staff work shifts, and part-time work is normally possible. DIY outlets are normally modern and spacious, but smaller stores, warehouses and yards may be cramped and cold.
Salaries range from about £8,000 for someone starting out, to around £50,000 for a manager.

There are no minimum qualifications, but GCSEs/S grades, particularly in English and maths, are useful. Adults with previous experience in the construction industry or retailing have a good chance of getting into this kind of work.
Training is usually on the job, and larger stores may have formal in-house training schemes. The Builders' Merchants Federation runs an Apprenticeship programme, and NVQs/SVQs are available at Levels 1, 2 and 3.
Many companies offer training to enable staff to progress to supervisory or management roles.
