Job Description - Print Page

Beauty consultants help their customers to choose the right beauty products for their lifestyle, to make the most of their personal appearance.

Most beauty consultants work in department stores.

Their job involves:

  • spending time with customers, helping them to choose products
  • understanding skin type, face shape and colouring, and knowing which products will be most effective and best suit their customer
  • recommending products which will suit their customer's lifestyle and age
  • keeping up to date with new ranges of products, fragrances and colour ranges
  • giving customers a facial or make-up.

Beauty consultants work between 37 and 40 hours a week, and do some weekend and evening work. They work in retail environments, which are busy, clean and well lit. They usually work behind a small counter area and spend most of their time standing, serving and advising customers.

Salaries range from around £8,500 to £30,000.

A beauty consultant should:

  • have a smart appearance and be well groomed
  • have excellent interpersonal skills
  • be good at selling.

There are opportunities to work as a beauty consultant all over the UK. Apart from department stores, beauty consultants can also work in very large hotels, airports, on cruise ships, or in an overseas branch of the cosmetic company.

They do not need formal qualifications as personal qualities are more important than exam passes. Employers look for good literacy and numeracy skills. Previous experience in retail, sales, or customer service can be an advantage.

There are some qualifications, which may be helpful - part or full-time college courses, vocational courses, on-the-job training and distance learning. Customer service and people skills are important in this job, so maturity can be an asset.

Beauty consultants combine on-the-job training, from senior members of the sales team, with training courses.

There are opportunities to progress to management where they will be given further training. They may find themselves working in a larger store or busier environment to develop their skills, knowledge and experience.
