Job Description - Print Page

Assemblers work in a wide range of manufacturing industries including electronics, automotive and furniture.

Their job involves fitting together products to produce either a completed item or a partially finished product, which is then passed on to another assembly worker.

They may work at an assembly line conveyor belt, working at the same speed as other assemblers on the line, or individually at their own pace, sitting or standing at a bench.

Some work involves following diagrams and instructions, or using tools such as screwdrivers, electric drills or soldering irons.

Assembly workers also spend time monitoring machines and computer-controlled equipment.

Assemblers usually work 37 to 40 hours per week. Shifts and overtime are common. Part-time work is common. Assemblers work in factories. Some are light and airy but others can be dusty, depending on what is being made.

Assemblers may earn from £9,000 to about £17,000 a year.

A light industry assembler needs to:

  • be good with their hands and nimble-fingered
  • understand and follow instructions and diagrams
  • work quickly, methodically and accurately
  • enjoy practical work.

Assemblers are employed throughout the UK by all kinds of manufacturing companies. The number of jobs is decreasing as more assembly processes are automated.

No educational qualifications are necessary although Key Skills qualifications and GCSEs/S grades are useful. Apprenticeships may be available. There is no upper age limit to entry as an assembler, as employers often welcome mature, reliable people for this kind of work.

Training is usually on the job, under the supervision of an experienced operator. NVQs/SVQs are available in a variety of relevant engineering and manufacturing subjects.

Promotion is possible to supervisor, chargehand or inspector.
