Job Description - Print Page

The army is one of the Armed Forces that work to defend Britain and its allies, both in this country and overseas. It also takes part in NATO (North Altantic Treaty Organisation) and UN (United Nations) operations wherever required in the world.

Being a soldier in the army can mean a variety of things. All soldiers carry out a wide range of duties, including taking part in military exercises and operations. They may also use a skill or trade essential to the army.

Working hours depend on the soldier's specialism - some may work office hours, while others work shifts. Hours may be long and irregular when taking part in exercises and operations, and soldiers may be separated from their family for long periods.

They are trained to work in a wide range of conditions and situations. Depending on their particular specialism, a soldier's work environment may be an office, outside in field conditions, or in specialist areas such as workshops or a kitchen.

An army recruit under 17 years of age earns from £11,774 a year. Senior NCOs (non-commissioned officers) earn up to £36,416 a year.

A soldier needs to:

  • be self-disciplined and confident
  • accept discipline
  • be able to use their own initiative
  • work as a member of a close-knit team
  • be physically fit with good stamina
  • be prepared to go into combat
  • be interested in serving the country.

There is a constant need for new recruits, so suitable candidates are in demand. On average, soldiers serve for nine years.

No formal qualifications are needed for most jobs, but candidates need GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) in specific subjects for army Apprenticeships. All entrants must pass the Army Entrance Test and an interview, followed by a physical assessment test, a medical and a further interview.

The minimum age for entry is normally 17 years, but apprentices and Army Foundation College students can join at 16 years. All entrants must meet army nationality requirements. The upper age limit for most trades is 30.

All recruits receive basic military training before going on to specialist training in their chosen field.

Promotion is possible from private up to warrant officer class I. Some NCOs are given the opportunity to go to Sandhurst and train to be officers.
