Advertising installers/bill posters fix posters or banners on hoardings, the sides of buildings, mounted display units, bus and underground train panels, and in shopping centres and other public places, usually as part of a team. They have to pay great attention to health and safety issues and use ropes, harnesses and access gear for work at heights. Advertising installers work for installation companies or are self-employed.
They usually work around 40 hours a week, sometimes with early morning starts and late finishes. They regularly travel to different advertising sites and locations. The majority of work is outdoors, but some work is inside, eg in shopping centres. Protective overalls are usually worn for pasting posters and warm clothing is required for high-level work.
Salaries range from around £10,000 for a trainee installer, to £25,000 or more for a highly experienced installer.

Companies employing advertising installers are based throughout the UK, usually in or near major cities. Self-employed installers must be prepared to travel to contracts in different locations in order to make a full-time living.
There are no formal academic requirements for the job. Most employers require applicants to be at least 18 years of age, physically fit and able to drive. There is no upper age limit to become an advertising installer.
New installers are usually given on-the-job training by their company. The Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) run Level 1 and 2 Technician and Level 3 Safety Supervisor courses for installers working at heights with rope, harnesses and access gear. The Outdoor Advertising Association (OAA) is introducing a new training scheme for advertising installers.
Promotion opportunities sometimes occur in companies, to supervisor/team leader or, with additional training, to a broader role, eg project manager. Self-employed installers' progress depends on becoming established and working to a consistently high standard.
