  • find venues for classes in schools, colleges and community centres
  • produce a programme of courses
  • run enrolment events
  • manage the budget for adult education.

Many adult education organisers also teach adults part time.

Adult education organisers may work full time or part time. They often work evenings and on Saturdays. They are office-based, although may sometimes work from home. They are likely to travel locally to visit classes and go to meetings.

Salaries for full-time organisers typically range from around £22,500 a year for new entrants to £31,630 a year or more for organisers who are responsible for a team of staff.

An adult education organiser should:

  • have experience of working with adults, preferably in a learning environment
  • be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people
  • be good at organising themselves and other people
  • have a strong interest in education.

Employers of adult education organisers include: local authorities (England and Wales only), independent adult education colleges and centres, further education colleges, the Workers' Educational Association, national voluntary organisations, community organisations, colleges of higher education, universities, and community learning and development (CLD) services (Scotland only).

Entrants to this field of work usually need experience of teaching adults and an adult teaching qualification. Many adult education organisers also have a degree. There is no upper age limit for entry to this work.

Employers arrange any training that organisers need.

Experienced organisers may go into education management, move into teaching full time, work on a government-funded initiative, or go into educational guidance or community development work.
