Do you want to become a Accounting Technician? Here is some information to help point you in the right direction:

Job Description - Print Page

Accounting technicians carry out many tasks, including:

  • maintaining and checking financial records
  • receiving and settling invoices from suppliers
  • monitoring company expenses
  • completing and submitting tax returns
  • managing the staff payroll.

They use computers for most of their work.

Their work depends on the size of the organisation. In a small company, they may be the only person qualified to look after financial records, invoices and wages. In a large company they may be part of a team.

Hours of work are normally 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Accounting technicians are office-based, although they may spend some time out of the office visiting clients.

Salaries range from around £14,000 to £25,000 a year, but may be higher for managers and self-employed accounting technicians.

An accounting technician should:

  • be good with figures
  • have good computer skills
  • communicate clearly in speech and writing
  • work well under pressure
  • work well on their own or as part of a team
  • have an interest in business and business finance
  • like working with people.

Accounting technicians are needed in all types of business, including accounting practices, commerce and industry and the public sector.

Although formal academic qualifications are not essential, employers often ask for GCSEs/S grades in English and maths. Many employers welcome older applicants.

Accounting technicians train while at work for qualifications such as the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) accounting qualification, based on an occupational training scheme, or the ACCA Certified Accounting Technician qualification.

Opportunities for career progression are good, especially if technicians study for the AAT qualification. Some accounting technicians become self-employed, providing book-keeping and advisory support to smaller organisations.

They may study for accounting qualifications while working, and progress to become qualified chartered accountants.
